Janice was recommended to me as a singing teacher by a very experienced singing colleague when I started work as a music and singing teacher. I studied with Janice for 12 years until I moved away to a different job. Despite that I will continue to see her studio as my vocal home, and I hope to visit for the occasional top-up if time allows.

Her tuition is professional, succinct, realistic and sensible as well as being extremely well informed. As my needs changed from that of a performer to that of a teacher so our teacher- pupil relationship changed to match my needs. Latterly I have used her as a sounding board for my own teaching opinions, as well as a calm and sensible reassurance when I am in the rare position of needing to perform. Her advice is often refreshingly candid, and delightfully lacking in obfuscating jargon.

Her input gave me confidence as I set out to build my own career as a singing teacher and, although my career has now taken a slightly different course, I would have found that quite scary without her. She gave me performance opportunities, and I hugely appreciated her efforts to come and hear me sing. In her manner and tone she always made me feel that I was an important and valued student, even though I know she has many others.

I have only had about four long- term singing teachers over 20 years but Janice stands out as being refreshingly practical in two rare aspects. One is that personal problems from either teacher or pupil are rarely allowed to interrupt the vocal work we do. The other is that she is happy for me to go to other teachers for one or two lessons, to get some other particular angles: some teachers would be jealous of that but I find that it reinvigorates our discussions.

I am now director of music of a small prep school with an excellent singing tradition. I sing regularly with a very good chamber choir and about twice a year I do amateur opera roles.

I became Janice Thompson’s student, in my seventies, after moving to Swindon in 2006. Coming late to singing, when nearly 50, I had sung in church choirs, a choral society, and later solo at concerts, weddings and social gatherings, and enjoyed many competitive successes in the Chichester Festival.  I had also sung leads in shows in Sussex and Hampshire but thought of myself as nearing the end of my solo singing when I arrived here.

But Janice Thompson gave me new direction and confidence and I soon won prizes in the Swindon Festival.  Janice has given me greater security at the top of the stave, encouraged me to venture into more demanding pieces, and dealt tirelessly and specifically with particular problems that I met in timing, phrasing, entries, physical posture and breath management.  Janice is particularly good at preparing me for specific assignments such as being cantor or chief soloist at church services, and in preparing me to sing at every sort of concert, church and social occasion.

I started singing with Janice when I was 14. I remember looking through a programme of a musical I’d seen at the Wyvern Theatre, and all the people I was impressed with had singing lessons from Janice, so I started having training with her in 2001 up until 2009 before moving to London. I trained in Musical Theatre at the Royal Academy of Music and recently graduated in June.

I feel that due to Janice’s training, not only did it improve my technique, knowledge and acting skills, I also gained a lot of confidence and experience from being involved in many shows and concerts through Janice, Including playing Witch in Into the Woods.

Tuition with Janice was very comfortable and enjoyable, Janice is a lovely lady!

I definitely owe a lot to Janice; she advised me to audition for RAM and really helped and pushed me in preparation for the audition. Not only did the experience from the amount of shows I’ve been involved in help me feel ready for the course, but without a doubt, so did all the training I have had from Janice and I wouldn’t have got this far without her.

Since being at RAM, I have been involved in concerts including singing at the Royal Albert Hall in Elton John’s concert and singing as a soloist in a concert for Stephen Sondheim himself, which was an absolute honour. I have also been in a professional Fringe production and a commercial for T Mobile- ‘Welcome Home’ at Heathrow T5.

I gained an agent from the Showcase at RAM and am currently auditioning. I am still completely passionate about singing and hoping to get to the next step.

Thank you Janice.

I began lessons with Janice when I was 11 years old and was tutored by her for 7 years, because of her fantastic training in singing I am now a member of the main National Youth Choir of Great britain, aswell as singing in the Imperial College Chamber Choir and part of a production with the Royal College of Music. Janice is a brilliant teacher and her organisation is awesome not just musically but is also very inclusive and fun. I still go back to watch the concerts if I get the chance.

Holly.

I studied singing with Janice from the age of 11 until I left at 18 to attend the Trinity College of Music. Janice’s teaching saw me through the first steps of vocal technique through to conservatoire auditions seven years later. She introduced me to a wide variety of repertoire and helped me to understand the fundamentals of singing technique at every stage of the way. I enjoyed being part of the various choirs and ensembles and relished the wide variety of performance opportunities that were open to me. She encouraged me to audition for the National Youth Choir, of which I was a member from 1994-9.

Since leaving Trinity, I continued my training in musical theatre at Mountview, and since then I have worked with Ray Cooney on his musical ‘Time’s Up’, played ‘Jack’s Mother’ in Into the Woods Upstairs at the Gatehouse, toured the world as principal singer onboard the QV and QM2 for Belinda King and Cunard and was most recently playing the Genie in Aladdin at Solihull Arts Complex. I also teach singing at Italia Conti, East 15, West End Stage and City Academy.

Janice’s teaching gave me the confidence and drive to pursue a career in performance. Assisting and leading classes with the younger students developed my teaching skills which I would have been unable to pay my way through college without, and I rely on now a great deal. The opportunities available to me through being one of her students enabled me to be a confident and versatile performer and on a personal level her faith in me and support were invaluable.

It was a wonderful opportunity to be one of Janice’s students.
